Italy: Sicily's anti-MUOS campaigners mock military commemorations


Anti-MUOS (Mobile User Objective System) demonstrators opposing the construction of new satellite communications installations which they say are harmful to people protested in Sicily on Wednesday commemorations of WWII Allied invasion of Sicily on Wednesday. The protesters are opposing the US defence department's ground station in Sicily which they say emits dangerous levels of electromagnetic radiation.

The anti-MUOS protesters mocked the military command with caricature salutes and marches. Some wore only body paint to the anti-MUOS demonstration, while other sang songs and wore clown noses to further mock the military presence.

MUOS is a network of telecommunications satellites being developed by the US Department of Defence, with ground stations in Virginia, Western Australia, Sicily and Hawaii. The No MUOS campaigners oppose the US military presence on Italian soil, along with any military installation that is consequential to human health. They also argues against anything harmful towards the ecosystem, the right to mobility, development of the territory, and the right to peace and security in the territory of its inhabitants.
